5. What kind of home style are you looking to build: For example Colonial or Victorian style; one-storied or two-storied?
   
6. Need to search or custom design your house plan

Custom home building: where the home building is based on a custom design and is individually built for the home owner

Production home building: where the home building is based on 3-4 different "production" designs for a particular neighborhood. The homeowner may buy one of the plans from the builder and construct the house as specified. Some production plans allow for structural changes at additional costs.

        7.  Find a contractor to price the project

• Nearly half of all referred contractors come from word of mouth — from family, friends, neighbors, neighborhood associations, real estate agents, building suppliers, architects, others
• View job site signs — these are particularly helpful if you can watch the progress of the project and performance
• Check media shows such as TV, radio, and newspaper clippings
• Visit home shows at new construction sites
• Find builders online: For example the National Home Builders Association would be a great place to start your search.
